What’s In Your Search Box?

Successful online information searches result from a combination of factors: matching the right online resource to the search topic; the searcher’s previous experience; knowledge of the subject; getting good advice from a librarian. Add to these the importance of choosing the appropriate search terms. The challenge, especially for students, is that it’s difficult to know the full range of terms used to describe any single topic. Choose the wrong term or exclude an important one from the search, and the results can be a vast misrepresentation of actual content on the topic.

In a recent column, web content consultant Gerry McGovern provided some interesting information from communications expert Frank Luntz. Luntz points out that as we modernize as a culture, some of our terms go out of fashion. Using the older terms can result in missing important, timelier information. For example, consider these words that have been replaced by newer ones:

WAS: Used car — IS NOW: Pre-owned vehicle
WAS: Secretary — IS NOW: Administrative assistant
WAS: Housewife — IS NOW: Stay-at-home-mom
WAS: Stewardess — IS NOW: Flight attendant
WAS: Waiter/Waitress — IS NOW: Server

McGovern adds some interesting data to make a point about how we choose our search terms. He writes:

According to Overture, in December 2006, 730,958 people searched for “used car,” while only 949 searched for “pre-owned vehicle.” Nearly 73,000 people searched for “housewife” (122,000 searched for “desperate housewife”), while only 43 searched for stay-at-home-mom. Over 30,000 searched for “gay marriage” while 19,000 searched for “same-sex marriage” (and what about “civil union”).

From the librarian’s perspective, this would reinforce that effective search results, whether you are using an Internet search engine or a library database requires broad conceptualizing about the variant terms that may be used to describe any single search subject. Using an outdated term or missing an obvious synonymous term can have a huge impact on the outcome of one’s search results. So how can we help students to think about this when they do their online searching? Faculty could do any or all of the following:

+ Demonstrate searches in class that illustrate creative thinking about developing search strategies.
+ Invite a librarian to your class to hold a mini-workshop on creating effective search strategies.
+ Integrate a search strategy development activity into an assignment so that students have an opportunity to share their search terms before they start researching an assignment.
+ Show students how to review their search results in a way that points out how alternate or synonymous terms can be found right in articles they are retrieving.

The Temple University Libraries’ librarians are full of great ideas about how students can be helped to become more effective researchers, and they are equally effective at helping both faculty and their students to develop the right techniques and tools to ensure that important learning outcomes are being achieved.

Library Catalog Update on the Horizon

An update as of January 24, 2007: As previously announced, the Temple University libraries plan to launch an updated, improved interface to Diamond, the Libraries’ online catalog, this year. Our original timetable called for the update to launch in January, prior to the Spring Semester. We have delayed that launch in order to take advantage of system enhancements (including improved sorting of search results) incorporated in a new release of the software that powers the online catalog. This new release is now promised to us in February, so our timetable has changed. Please watch for announcements in March of a public preview of the new catalog — allowing you to try the new interface with current data and suggest any final changes. Apology for Website Unavailability

I would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by the unavailability of the Libraries’ website during the holiday closure.

The Libraries’ website, including our extensive menu of links to external databases and full-text journals, was unavailable intermittently during Temple’s holiday closure. Security software installed on our webserver registered recurrent attacks or other suspicious activity and shut down the server to protect data. Library staff on call brought the system back online during the University closure as they became aware of the problems, but subsequent apparent attacks prompted repeated shutdowns.

The webserver and its firewall were stabilized early Tuesday morning (1/2/07) and have been continuously available since then.

We have taken additional steps behind the scenes to prevent recurrence of such extensive outages which we all recognize as having impeded research activity by faculty and students working over the break. Further hardware and software modifications will continue during the spring so that we can continue to improve the reliability of access to the increasingly broad and indispensable array of online resources and services we now offer. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience this problem caused. We will do our best to ensure that it does not happen again.

Rare Book Discussion Dec. 13: Gutenberg Bible

Our Rare Book of the Month discussion series continues on Wednesday, December 13th, at 4 p.m., in the Special Collections Reading Room on the mezzanine of Paley Library. This month’s feature is the Gutenberg Bible, the first book printed from moveable type in the west, circa 1455. You are invited to inspect the Libraries’ copy of this rare volume and participate in a discussion led by Tom Whitehead, Head of Special Collections. Tom’s discussion will also include progressive printing of the 15th century and the process of hand type composition and printing. Apply for George D. McDowell Fellowship

The Urban Archives at Temple University Libraries invite applications for the 2007 George D. McDowell Fellowship. The McDowell Fellowship provides support for two fellowships not to exceed three weeks of research and study in the Urban Archives.

The Fellowship was established in memory of George D. McDowell, the last librarian at the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin newspaper. The Bulletin was founded in 1847 and the final issue was printed January 29, 1982. Shortly after the paper closed, Temple University acquired its entire clipping and photograph libraries. The clippings are an incomparable resource for research on the Philadelphia metropolitan area. They date back to the 1890s but the bulk of the clipping collection covers the period 1920-1981. Most importantly, the clipping collection is indexed by name or broad subject categories. The photographs date back to the early 20th century, with the bulk of the images covering 1940-1981. The photographs are also indexed by name and subject.

The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin Collection is the major resource in the Urban Archives and is complemented by more than 250 manuscript collections, which altogether provides one of the most comprehensive resources documenting the social, economic, and political development of an urban area.

Purpose of the Fellowship

The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide an opportunity for scholars to do research using the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin Collection and produce a scholarly work.

Who can apply

Undergraduate and graduate students, independent scholars, educators, writers, film makers and anyone interested in the history of Philadelphia are invited to apply. Current employees of Temple University are ineligible.

Steven Bell Appointed Associate University Librarian

bellinqphoto_sm.jpgWe are delighted to announce that Steven J. Bell has accepted the position of Associate University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services, concluding a national search we began last spring. He will join the library on Friday, December 22, 2006.

Steven currently is the director of the Gutman Library at Philadelphia University as well as a noted author, speaker, and leader in the library profession. He has written more than thirty articles and was profiled in the Library Journal Movers and Shakers of Librarianship series in 2002. Among his responsibilities, Steven will oversee reference and instructional services, access services, the suburban libraries, the Science, Engineering and Architecture Library, and a media services department. He also will participate in the conception, design, and implementation of improved library services. In partnership with faculty, the head of Paley Library reference, and other librarians, he will develop instructional programs to ensure that students graduate with the information skills needed for success in today’s world.

Steven holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Temple, so it is a pleasure to welcome him back home. He also holds a Masters in Library Science from Drexel University and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Sandi Thompson Assumes Interim Head Position

s_thompson.jpeWe are pleased to announce that Sandra Thompson has agreed to accept the position of Interim Head of the Suburban Campus Libraries following Linda Cotilla’s retirement. Sandi will be responsible for the operations of the Ambler and Tyler libraries.

Sandi holds the B.A. degree in History from Pennsylvania State University, University Park and a Masters of Science in Library Science from Drexel University. Since obtaining her MLS from Drexel in 1984, Sandi has worked as Bibliographic Services Librarian at the Ambler Library. Prior to that, she worked in several Bibliographic Assistant positions in the Paley Library system. She has been very active professionally at Temple and in regional and national library organizations.

Derik Badman Is New Digital Services Librarian

d_badman.jpeWe are pleased to announce the appointment of Derik A. Badman as a librarian on the Paley Library staff. Derik has been working as a librarian at the Ambler Campus for almost two years. At the Ambler Library he was responsible for Access services and helped provide reference and instructional services both at Ambler and on the main campus.

Derik received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Temple’s Tyler School of Art and his Masters in Library and Information Science from Drexel University. While earning his Masters degree he worked as a supervisor in the former Zahn Library. Derik will work in the Paley Reference and Instructional Services Department as Digital Services Librarian where he will evaluate current and emerging technologies to help improve delivery of information to support teaching, learning, and research at Temple. He will also serve as liaison for collection development, reference, and instructional services for the College of Education and the School of Social Administration.

Introducing Kristina De Voe, Librarian

devoe.jpe We are pleased to announce the appointment of Kristina De Voe as a librarian on the Paley Library staff. Kristina comes to the Temple University Libraries from Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio. She received her Masters in English with a specialization in Rhetoric and Composition Studies from The Ohio State University and her Masters in Library and Information Science from Kent State University. While an undergraduate at St. Cloud University, where she double majored in English and History, she spent a summer studying at Oxford University.

Kristina will work in the Paley Reference and Instructional Services Department. She will serve as liaison for collection development, reference, and instructional services for the following departments: English Broadcasting, Telecommunications, and Mass Media Communications Journalism We are delighted to welcome Kristina to Temple University and Philadelphia, and to have her on our staff.
