Do karst springs, with their fast conduit flow paths, respond more sharply to a warming climate than everything else?



Mostly, no.

We pulled together 49 springs across the US and Europe — every one with at least 30 years of daily discharge — and found discharge trends that were small and remarkably similar across a dataset spanning 0.001 to 25 m³/s and variability indices from 45% to 6500%. Flashy springs behaved a lot like less variable ones. The most likely explanation is that groundwater storage buffers hydrologic stress even in highly karstified aquifers — the spring with the largest decline, Silver Spring in Florida, sits in a confined, low-storage system with heavy pumping nearby.

Warmer air temperatures were associated with declining discharge, but bigger temperature trends did not produce bigger discharge trends. Vulnerability looks like a combination of drivers, not a single one.
