In Fall 2023, I will for the first time be teaching a section of “Elements of Data Science for Physical and Life Sciences.” This course is modeled on a course taught at Berkeley. I like this course because it teaches incoming science majors fundamental Python programming skills and tools for data exploration and analysis — skills needed in every scientific discipline.
Student work through a series of Jupyter notebooks, tackling problems of increasing complexity, culminating in an introduction to machine learning. Students will also get a chance to work on data sets of their own choosing for the final group project.
