Tell a Story with Maps: Scrolling Narratives with ArcGIS StoryMaps
A map shows you where. A map story shows you why it matters. Scrolling narratives that move a reader from place to place have become a standard format for journalism, research communication, and community reporting — and they are within reach of anyone who can make a basic map.
This session starts with craft rather than software: what makes a map narrative land, how to structure one, and when a scrolling story beats a slideshow or a guided tour. We will look at three real examples, including one that does not work, and figure out why. Then you will build and publish a short story of your own in ArcGIS StoryMaps, the tool included with Temple’s ArcGIS license, ending with the parts people usually skip — embedding it and citing your sources properly.
Bring a topic and any data you have. If you took the ArcGIS Online session in October, you already have the account and can reuse a map you made there — but neither is required.
This workshop will be offered as an online session via Zoom. You must register for this workshop to receive the Zoom link via a confirmation email. On the day of the workshop, use the link to join the session.
