Communication Arts magazine, a professional visual communications journal, recently awarded one of its prestigious 2023 64th Annual Communications Arts Illustration awards to Chad Xuyuan Hu. He received the award for his artwork, “Garden of Illusion”.

Hu’s illustration, based on Michael Pollan’s New York Times article “Michael Pollan Explores the Mind-Altering Plants in His Garden,” depicts a crumbling garden with exotic plants and melting concrete.

Winning this award, according to Hu, adds credibility to his portfolio and helps him stand out while opening doors to new opportunities ranging from freelance work to job offers.

“This award is important to me because it validates my hard work and dedication as an illustrator, ” said Hu. “I am happy to gain industry recognition,” he added.

This year, Hu received the Graphic and Interactive Design Wild Card Award from Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple. Also, his packaging project, Bao Héo Tang, was selected for the Communication Arts 2023 Design Shortlist.

He strongly feels that working as a designer for Temple’s Global Engagement Office helped him gain valuable experience and skills, which led to his growth as a designer and illustrator and to his success.
