The First Year Writing Program at Temple University honored William Ferreira, a recent exchange student from Brazil, with the Mary Ann Mannino Award for improving his writing skills in English 711, and for his dedication to community service. The First Year Writing Program helps students succeed academically and socially at Temple University.

The award commemorates Mary Ann Mannino, Ph.D., a former associate professor of English at Temple who dedicated her career to community-based education and writing. Award winners like Ferreira reflect those same goals and achievements.

Always interested in applying and developing his skills whenever he can, Ferreira worked this past year as an intern for Temple’s Office of Global Engagement as a videographer showcasing Temple’s great diversity.

“Winning this award is important because it showed me I was on the right track,” said Ferreira. “I’m more confident in my writing skills, which is particularly important now that I’m specializing in scriptwriting,” he added.

Adding to achievements at Temple, Ferreira also won 2nd place for best long audio format for his podcast, “The Sounds and Me”, which focused on how the sounds in our daily lives tell a story.

His podcast can be found on Spotify.
