Nick Gallego (they/them) is the Supervisor of the Scholars Studio. They have a B.A. in Linguistics from Temple, graduating in the class of 2018. Their focus was in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, examining the relationship between language and society and how each affects the other.
Prior to returning to Temple as part of the Scholars Studio team, they’ve worked at both the Free Library of Philadelphia and Drexel University Libraries. Their time with the Free Library began as a work study student through Temple, and later on they became a LEAP Maker Mentor at the Field Teen Center at the Parkway Central Library. There they opened a makerspace for teens and provided daily maker programming as part of the Free Library’s Literacy Enrichment After-School Program (LEAP). After departing the Free Library, they moved to Drexel where they worked in Print Resources as well as Administration.
Outside of the Scholars Studio, they work in a variety of artistic media merging fine arts, modern techniques and technology, and traditional crafts such as fibers and wood carving. Most of their work is inspired by the art and culture of Ancient Near East, particularly that of the Egyptian and Hittite civilizations. They also study the languages of the two cultures, including how to write in hieroglyphs and cuneiform, featuring them prominently in their work.
