This year, for the ninth consecutive year, from October 21 to October 25, the Office of Global Engagement continued its proud tradition of hosting a week’s worth of internationally focused programming. The events were united by their goal to connect Temple students and staff with the university’s rich global community and culture.
The theme, “Your Ticket to the World,” was reflected in the fact that this year attendees had access to the largest number of events ever, several which were new this year, such as a talk by UN representative about Global Career Careers at the U.N. and a Global Connections Mixer.
The week began with the well-attended Kickoff at the Founder’s Garden co-hosted by the Global Philadelphia Association. At the World Heritage themed Kickoff, students had the opportunity to play games to educate themselves on the many World Heritage sites and cities located at/near Temple’s global campuses in Rome, Tokyo, Kyoto, Oviedo and including World Heritage city, Philadelphia.
The next day, another popular event, our International Coffee Hour, also highlighted the location of one of Temple’s global campuses, Japan. Students enjoyed delicious Japanese treats like sushi and maccha, as well as a beautiful flower arranging demonstration . Later that day, students were treated to a Wellness Recharge, an incredibly relaxing yoga & sound bath experience.
On Wednesday, Education Abroad hosted their biggest event of the year, the annual Study Abroad Fair, which brought Temple’s many partners from on campus and abroad to talk about the wealth of opportunities available to students looking for an international experience, whether it be studying at one of Temple’s global campuses or going to a more unusual location, such as Peru or Ghana.
Later that evening, Jayashri Wyatt, Chief of the Education Outreach Section from the U.N., demystified how aspiring students can pursue Global Careers at the U.N. The audience demonstrated their deep interest by asking many questions and after her presentation, she was interviewed by Temple’s Assistant Vice President of Human Resources, Eric Brunner.
In keeping with the professional development theme, this year’s Temple Lingo was co-sponsored with Temple’s Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) and focused on key words and phrases used in business across a variety of languages from Arabic to Portuguese to American Sign Language. Later that day, students considering studying abroad met and mingled with Temple students who previously studied abroad at Education Abroad’s Global Connections Mixer.
The amazing week culminated with the main event, the Global Gala, which was incredibly well attended. As always, we were thrilled by the many international student organizations and offices tabling and handing out treats and all the talented performers. We are so grateful to have had so many students and friends sharing their cultures and engaging with our Temple community. See our social media recap of the event here!
Thank you for an incredible and successful 2024 Global Engagement Week. We’re so excited for you to join us next year!
