Road salt testimony

I was asked to testify about the impacts of road salts on area streams for the Philadelphia City Council, who are considering alternative strategies for de-icing. Road salt has contributed to a steady increase in chloride concentrations in area streams, with averages around 200 mg/L (up from 50 mg/L a few decades ago). Peak concentrations are even higher. The city council hearing was covered by the Philadelphia Inquirer and NBC News Online interviewed me in a follow up story.
