E is for Emergent (Augmented Reality Projects)

Curatorial Statement:

Like last year, this volume’s E-is-for-Emergent category highlights work created with augmented reality. These featured projects were created in MSP 4541: Mobile Media with Dr. Adrienne Shaw and Prof. Laura Zaylea, and MSP 4741/8741: Emergent Media Production with Prof. Laura Zaylea.

The Mobile Media students were tasked with creating a set of augmented postcards, and forming a stylistic connection between the mobile text object and the augmented content. Students were asked to use their creative design work to “comment upon where you are or where you wish you could be.” The projects demonstrate a range of approaches, from sharing hidden/interactive messages in the projects of Haya Qubbaj, Deja Mittchel, and Bekah Santos to telling a story in two parts across postcards by Dean Blizzard. Jamie Gray and Sabrina Wenner created more traditional postcard series; they use augmented content to bring the sender and receiver closer together.

The projects highlighted here from Emergent Media Production are books and magazines in which the physical pages are augmented with animation, sound and video content. In this interview video, five creators talk about their work: Maya Queenan describes Women Champions, her magazine highlighting women in sports; Katie Travers describes the fantastical animations she created of her dog in the scrapbook-style book Harper; Rachel Bromberg and Allison Silibovsky explain how they augmented recipes with instructional videos in the cookbook Cooking Card Queens; and Deja Mitchell explained how she worked with collaborator Maddie McWilliams to design and augment the pages of their fashion magazine, The Style Section.

All of these projects are augmented with an app called ARtivive. To experience these projects, please download the app (it’s free!), download the images, scan images with ARtivive, and enjoy! You can also see the documentation videos to see how each project is meant to be experienced.
