ABOUT THE CLA TRANSLATION INSTITUTE: The CLA Translation Institute (CTI) provides no-cost translation and interpretation to local organizations serving children and families throughout Philadelphia. Funded by a grant from The William Penn Foundation, the CTI provides professional development and training in language translation and interpretation for CLA students, while increasing access to information and services for non-English speaking communities in the region. Spanish and Chinese language services will be offered beginning in September 2024.
ABOUT THE POSITION: The CTI Undergraduate Intern position (9 hrs/week) will report to the CTI Project Manager. This will be a hybrid position that will require both in-person hours on campus as well as flexible, remote hours. In addition to honing translation and interpretation skills, CTI interns will gain experience working with nonprofit organizations, collaborating with a team to manage a project, and performing professional interpretation.
The CTI Intern will primarily be responsible for:
- Translating documents as requested by community organizations
- Reviewing translations from peer interns
- Incorporating feedback from the TA supervisor for translation
- Participating in monthly professional development activities
- Shadowing professional interpreters as arranged by CTI staff
- Engaging in reflections and debriefing sessions with the co-Directors and the supervising TA
- Performing other relevant duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Advanced language skills in English and Spanish or Chinese
- Excellent written and verbal skills
- Proven record of ability to meet deadlines
- Hardworking and team-oriented
- Independent worker
- Self-starter
