Curatorial Statement by Prof. Laura Zaylea:
Projects made for MSP3701 Genres of Media Production: Cross-Platform Story are interactive videos with transmedia elements. In Here & Now, four student media makers teamed up with musician Anthony Cubbage to create an interactive music video that highlights not only the themes of his new song but also key MSP assets. One interactive thread is filmed in TV3, our news TV production studio; another is filmed in Studio 1, and takes an artistic approach to lighting design; and another is filmed on location in and around the city of Philadelphia. The video is inspired by the Bob Dylan ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ interactive music video, in which the viewer ‘plays’ the interactive video by ‘changing the channel’ (or, pressing buttons on a TV interface that switches between threads of the video, each showing characters from recognizable TV tropes singing the song lyrics). In a contemporary remake, Kristina Stidham, Spencer Trabbold, Jennifer Sheppard and Zach Corey put together a click-able YouTube interface. The video begins with Cubbage falling asleep while watching YouTube videos, and it becomes “interactive” as he finds himself within the interface itself. One of the four parallel threads also nods to contemporary tropes as it re-creates a “my boyfriend did my make-up” YouTube video. As all MSP3701 projects are turned in with transmedia elements that expand the story beyond the screen, this video includes a social media presence (Spotify, Facebook), unique design for a record cover, and customized guitar picks.
