Curatorial Statement:

The four mobile videos were created in MSP4541: Mobile Media in Fall 2022 with Dr. Adrienne Shaw and Prof. Laura Zaylea. Students were asked to create videos entirely on a mobile phone or tablet, ideally filming and editing on the same device if possible. They were asked to make videos that express what it means to feel both mobile and connected to other people, specifically considering the themes of engagement, conversation, and connection. The resulting projects varied greatly. All projects were submitted with research papers, reflecting on how scholarship about mobile video and the social interaction elements of mobile media were used to inform the creators’ work. Although you can experience these videos on any web-connected device, we recommend you try viewing them on a smart phone or tablet to experience them as particularly mobile works.

The three immersive videos were created in MSP 4741/8714: Emergent Media Production with Prof. Laura Zaylea, working in collaboration with MSP 4446/8446: Psychological Processing of Media with Dr. Matthew Lombard. Students were asked to use 360° immersive video cameras to produce videos designed to create experiences of presence for viewers. We recommend viewing these projects via a head-mounted display, so that you can turn your head and look around within the immersive video. If this is not possible, these videos can also be viewed via YouTube on laptops or mobile devices, and you can “look around” within the video by clicking/tapping the screen or using the navigation wheel in the top left corner of the video.
