February Book Club – My Broken Language

It’s February 1st and you know what that means…. it’s the first day of BOOK CLUB! Our selection this month is My Broken Language by Quiara Alegría Hudes. Quiara is a West-Philly native who writes about her experiences growing up bilingual in a Puerto Rican family in Philadelphia.

“Weaving together Hudes’s love of music with the songs of her family, the lessons of North Philly with those of Yale, this is a multimythic dive into home, memory, and belonging—narrated by an obsessed girl who fought to become an artist so she could capture the world she loved in all its wild and delicate beauty.”

Charles Library has print copies and online copies. The Free Library also has (LOTS OF) print copiesonline copies, and audiobooks.

My Broken Language was the 2022 selection for the Free Library’s One Book, One Philadelphia program. Check out their website for some companion reading and discussion resources. I’ll be highlighting during the month, too!

As you read the book, stop by The Huddle and check out the book club white board. Share quotes you like, questions you have, or things that resonate with your own life. The Honors staff is going to read the book, too, so feel free to chat with us, too!

We might call our book club passive, but our engagement with the text is anything but. Our goals for passive book club are to engage with stories and texts of all kinds to challenge our beliefs, expand our knowledge, and find community in unexpected places.
