Acknowledgment and Authorship Guidelines 

Acknowledging the contributions of core facility staff in research publications is important for maintaining an accurate scientific record and recognizing the expertise and resources that support the research.

Acknowledgment: Facility staff should be acknowledged when their contributions support the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship. Examples include: 

• Routine instrument training and technical assistance  

• Routine data acquisition without substantial involvement in analysis or interpretation  

• General technical or operational support  

Co-Authorship: Facility scientists should be considered for co-authorship when they make substantial intellectual or technical contributions to the research, including: 

• Development or significant modification of experimental methods or protocols  

• Nonroutine data acquisition, analysis, or interpretation requiring substantial scientific expertise  

• Contributions to experimental design or interpretation of results  

• Drafting or substantive revision of the manuscript  

Authorship should reflect the nature and significance of the contribution and should be discussed with facility scientists as the research develops. Facility scientists may decline authorship or request that data for which they are scientifically responsible not be used if they have significant concerns regarding its interpretation or presentation.
