EES 2001 – Physical Geology
Physical geology provides a working introduction to Earth materials and the major processes that shape our planet including the theories and concepts behind these processes. Geology plays an important role in many aspects of our lives from everyday natural resources including soil (food) and water to environmental hazards and natural disasters (earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunami). This course is intended to prepare geology and environmental science majors for advanced studies, while also providing all students with general knowledge of how our planet operates, allowing them to become better-informed citizens of the world around them. Upon completion of this course, students have an understanding of the rock cycle, plate tectonics, geohazards, surface processes, environments, natural resources, and the climate system. Laboratory sessions provide hands-on experience and focus on the identification of mineral and rock specimens, map skills, and the visualization and interpretation of Earth processes.
