Primary Source

The source that I choose is a book by Edward Needles titled An Historical Memoir of the Pennsylvania Society, For Promoting the Abolition of Slavery; The Relief of Free Negroes Held in Bondage and For Improving the Condition of the African Race. This source is a memoir compiled from files of the Pennsylvania Society. This society was dedicated to abolishing slavery in Pennsylvania and improving the treatment of African Americans. This book details the different events that the Pennsylvania went through while fighting slavery. The book goes over both victories and defeats of the Pennsylvania Society. It discusses things such as the Fugitive Slave Laws and other slavery laws that they fought against. I think that this source was archived because it was an important detailed book about the efforts of the Pennsylvania Society to abolish slavery. It was an important historical document and was most likely kept by the Pennsylvania Society. This book fits into the larger story of dispute over slavery because it illustrates just one of the many Northern states that fought to abolish slavery. This illustrates the sectional divide that slavery caused in the United States. It also illustrates the larger picture of the story of slavery in the US and how people fought to abolish it.
