1st place: Wing Clipper
Grace White gracewhitecreative.com
Klein College of Media and Communication, Advertising – Art Direction
Description: This poem is inspired by the tone and cadence of “Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why)” by Nikki Giovanni. This piece is prose about the power that comes within overcoming an oppressor and reclaiming yourself. Notice the speaker begins the poem referring to herself as “i” and him as “Him”, at the climax she realizes her strength and refers to herself as “I” and him with a lowercase “H”. This sentiment celebrates breaking free and using freedom to create justice for yourself and others.
2nd place: “Justice Is”
Tyler Rebmann
Klein College of Media and Communication, Advertising
Description: Justice Is presents different perspectives of what justice means to me personally as an American. As a country built on liberty and equal opportunity, it’s important not to take advantage of your privileges, but to recognize them with compassion for others.
3rd place: “Justice or Just a Lie?”
Brendan Gemelli
College of Liberal Arts, Criminal Justice
Description: Justice is seen in the world in many different ways. In current society gun violence, racism, and ultimately hatred are ruining communities and families. Everybody is consumed by capitalism and greed. I ask the question where is justice for society? Why aren’t we being told the truth? We have to all look inside ourselves and ask, what is true justice or just a lie?
