Changing Times Study

We need your help to understand how children think! We are scientists who research what makes children different from adults. Research uses the scientific method to collect data, or information from many people, in order to answer a question.

Our research question: How is this summer different from all other summers?

The purpose of this research project is to learn about how children and parents pay attention, especially to screens and outdoor time. Kids use a lot of new technology to play outside and inside and we need your help to keep up with all the changes!

What you should know about a research study:

We will ask you to complete questionnaires and play games for half an hour (30 min) today.  You can stop in the middle at any time, and if you want to finish, return to finish it any time.

  1. First, you will be asked some questions about what you like to do in the summer, and on your phone, computer or tablet. We want to know about all your favorite games and apps.
  2. Then you will get a break – you can play a virtual fruit snack game during this break, or walk around, or use your device for whatever you choose.
  3. Next you will play online games: in one game, you will fill a balloon with air. In another game, you will identify the direction of the most important fish.

Your answers to these questions and all the information from this study will be kept private, not only from your parents but also from us researchers.

We will not know who you are, because you will have a new secret identity. All the information from this study will be stored with this new identity. You are:

  • These are the rules of research. You do not need to agree to do the research yet, but we ask that you check the box if you understand each rule. You 'assent' if you check the box; if you do not check the box, you can leave it blank and type in a question for the researcher.
  • When you complete a research study, even online, you are a participant. Participating in research means you do the study. Like before, read each line and click on each box if you understand the rule.
  • Please enter a number from 100 to 999.
To participate you need to enter this three-digit secret identity into the box above. Write it down, don't tell anyone but your parent, and keep it a secret! We will ask you for it again at the end of the survey and we will email it to your parent, don’t worry!
  • Make sure it's the same one they used for their consent
