Sanders & Gast – new publication about Arctic picomixotrophs in FEMS Microbiology Ecology
Link
The paper “Bacterivory by phototrophic picoplankton and nanoplankton in Arctic waters” was recently published in FEMS Microbiology Ecology (82:242-253, 2012). It is the first demonstration mixotrophy in polar waters & demonstrates the potential of mixotrophic picophytoplankton as grazers in polar waters. Link to the article is here.
Erin Graham has paper published in Journal of Experimental Biology
Link
The Journal of Experimental Biology published the paper “Intracapsular algae provide fixed carbon to developing embryos of the salamander Ambystoma maculatum” authored by Erin Graham, Scott Fay and Robert Sanders. See the abstract here.
Dr. Sanders presents at International protistology meeting
Link
Dr. Sanders gave a talk at the annual meeting of the International Society of Protistologists (ISOP) in Oslo, Norway- July 29 – Aug 4, 201. The presentation, entitled “Temperature-driven changes in growth and bacterivory in a common mixotrophic chrysophyte,” was co-authored by graduate student Sarah DeVaul and Dr. Adam Heinze.
Erin Graham presents at International Symbiosis Society Congress
Link
Graduate student Erin Graham attended the 7th ISS Congress in Krakow Poland (July 2012). She presented her research on the symbiotic relationship between eggs/larvae of the spotted salamander, Ambystoma maculatum, and the flagellated green alga, Oophila amblystomatis. In addition, Congress organizers asked her to participate in a Symposium on Symbiosis Education where she presents the salamander/alga mutualism as an innovative curriculum activity.
Erin Graham invited to EcoDAS symposium
Link
Graduate student Erin Graham was recently invited to participate in the 2013 Ecological Dissertations in the Aquatic Sciences (Eco-DAS, pronounced eco-days) symposium in Hawaii. These NSF supported symposia seek to bridge interdisciplinary gaps in aquatic ecology. Further info about Eco-DAS found at: http://cmore.soest.hawaii.edu/eco-das/index.htm
Jesse Lepkowski joins lab team
Link
Temple undergraduate Jesse Lepkowski started in the lab in May 2012 and will begin working on new projects with mixotrophic flagellates. His interest in fungi may lead to new investigation of freshwater chytrids by the lab.
New publications with Dr. An-Yi Tsai
Link
Former postdoctoral scholar Dr. An-Yi Tsai, now at National Taiwan Ocean University, has recent publications with Dr. Sanders as a co-author. See publications.
