THE RAHMAN LAB / ABOUT
They call me “Z.”
My name is Zeshawn Rahman. I am an organic chemist, researcher, and chemistry teacher based in Philadelphia. The Rahman Lab, also known as The KZ Lab, brings together my interests in chemistry, teaching, and classic Kawasaki motorcycles.
A foundation in chemistry
I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciences with a chemistry concentration at Temple University in December 2024, graduating with Distinction in Major.
My research experience includes independent organic synthesis research under Dr. Steve Fleming and developing layered double hydroxide electrocatalysts in Dr. Michael Zdilla’s laboratory. These experiences strengthened my interest in how chemical structure influences chemical behavior.
From the bench to the classroom
At Temple, I served as adjunct faculty in general and organic chemistry (endeared “Prof. Z” by my students) and as an Educational Support Specialist, helping graduate students use laboratory instruments and develop their research skills.
I currently teach chemistry to high school students in Philadelphia. My teaching draws on forensic science and human anatomy and physiology; connecting chemistry with questions across the sciences.
I want each of my students to see themselves as someone capable of understanding the “why” behind scientific questions through multiple lenses.
Curiosity beyond the laboratory
In the workshop, I enjoy repairing classic Kawasaki “KZ” motorcycles as a hobby. These restorations bring together problem-solving, patience, and the satisfaction of understanding how these old machines work, one stuck screw at a time. See what I’m working on below:

Educational Support Specialist
Temple University, Department of Chemistry · January–November 2025
Trained graduate students in the safe use of specialized laboratory equipment. Troubleshot and repaired instruments and supported organic and inorganic synthesis, catalyst development, and air-free techniques.
LVSS Daytime Faculty
The Lawrenceville School · July 2025
Developed and taught forensic science and anatomy and physiology courses for rising sixth- through ninth-grade students in a three-week summer program. Connected forensic techniques with chemistry and guided student projects on human body systems.
Research Experience
Independent Organic Synthesis
Temple University · Dr. Steve Fleming
January 2022–November 2025
Investigated organophosphorus reagents for amination, including the Azido-Wittig reagent concept. Conducted synthesis involving medicinal natural products with benzochromene and indole motifs.
Layered Double Hydroxide Electrocatalysts
Temple University · Dr. Michael J. Zdilla
