Sociologist Ray Oldenberg first introduced the idea of core “places” in our social environment. The first place is the home, the second place the workplace, and the third place where community happens. Such places are viewed as vital spots for social connection, interaction, and creativity. Third place(s) may look like a go-to coffee shop; place of worship, community recreation center, et cetera. Alongside introducing students to the idea of third spaces, this course narrows in to focus on the function of green spaces (ie; public parks, wildlife refuges, community gardens) as important modern third places in urban environments for community building, human health, and ecological conservation. Students will gain interdisciplinary theoretical background on the function of third spaces in civic life, explore green spaces in Philadelphia, develop their civic communication skills, and collaboratively draft a proposal for a revitalized or new greenspace here in Philadelphia. **THIS IS A COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING CLASS.**
