Honors Peer Mentors (HPMs) are upper-level Honors students looking to give back to the Honors community by assisting new students in their transition to Honors, Temple and Philadelphia. In the required 1-credit Spring Honors Peer Mentor Training course, HPMs are trained in various communication and counseling techniques, referral strategies and student development theory and are then matched with new students to help them adjust to and succeed in college coursework, develop time management and academic success skills, and connect them with Temple and Philadelphia resources.
Honors Peer Advisors (HPAs) are upper-level Honors students who are passionate about fostering a supportive environment for new students as they transition to Temple University. HPAs undergo advanced training in advising skills, course selection, and in-depth knowledge of student development in the 2-credit Spring Honors Peer Advisor course. This equips them to provide tailored support and guidance, helping new students navigate academic challenges, enhance time management skills, and connect with essential resources on campus and in the community. HPAs also serve as mentors and are matching with incoming students, however, they receive additional training on academic course selection and will complete a required 6 hours of Peer Advising during the month of October.
You may apply for either role. Whether you choose to apply as an HPA or HPM, both roles offer the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of incoming students. Full completion of a training course along with your service requirement (mentoring + event or peer advising attendance) will count for 1 Upper Level Honors requirement. The course alone cannot count as your requirement.
Requirements
- HPMs and HPAs must be on campus for Spring 2025 and Fall 2025. If you are studying abroad, you are ineligible to serve on the HPM 2025-2026 cohort. HPMs must complete the 1-credit or 2-credit training course in the spring to serve as a mentor.
- Two sections of this course will be offered. If you cannot register for the class, you are ineligible to serve on the HPM 2024-2025 cohort.
- To meet the service requirement, HPMs are required to take on a small caseload of mentees in the fall along with attending 3 community events.
- To meet the service requirement, HPAs are required to take on a small number of mentees in the fall along with hosting 6 hours of Peer Advising during the month of October.
