I arrived at the event early and was the second person there, and as people came in, I got friendly waves and little hellos. I didn’t have many expectations for the music, but my idea of jazz consisted of saxophones, night clubs, and images of the roaring 20’s, and I didn’t think this experience would change anything about these ideas. Suzzette was immediately very friendly with the audience, and on stage she and the band were like a little family. They joked around with each other and even had written a song about her dog. The music itself was more light and clear than the jazz music that existed in my head, and I enjoyed the strong drum presence that’s a quintessential aspect of Latin jazz. Overall I had a really good time and enjoyed it a lot. The music was lovely, and the atmosphere was friendly and warm. Even though the concert was held in a church, I felt right at home which is definitely not always the case because I’m Jewish. I felt that I learned a lot about Suzzette’s values and experiences and that, for a brief moment, I was connected to all the people around me by a shared love of her music.
