Although trained as an American historian and with experience teaching the breadth of U.S. history, Seth is excited to focus on his passion by using sport to unpack and understand the world around us. In his teaching, Seth focuses on helping students develop skills like analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of evidence that will be valuable to them regardless of their future career path.
Seth aims to inspire students’ intellectual curiosity and help them understand sport and its history so they can better understand the world around them. One way he does that is by giving students time each week to ask about the history of current events related to the topic of the course. For example, in a Sport in American Life course students frequently asked about the history of the intersection between sports and politics—a context often missing from the media coverage they saw—and he showed them how to find answers using the library’s resources, rather than less-reliable ones like Google.
Seth has earned recognition of his efforts in the classroom through multiple teaching awards and continues to hone his skills by regularly participating in pedagogy workshops and following the latest scholarship on teaching and learning.
