We understand that participating in a research study can seem intimidating at first. Additionally, we understand that safety is of the utmost importance. We have typed up some common questions and answers regarding participation in our research study.
1. What is an MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is painless and works by creating a magnetic field around you and by directing radio waves at your body. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) uses this technique to map blood flow to various regions of the brain–highlighting that there is activation in those regions.
The current MRI study takes approximately one hour in the scanner. During that time, participants are encouraged to remain as still as possible so that the images are clear. While in the scanner, participants will be completing computer games which allow them to earn some additional money. To minimize movement while in the scanner, participants respond by pressing down a button on a glove which will be attached to their right hands using velcro (see below).
Our participants will have the opportunity to use a mock MRI scanner in our lab on Main Campus before attending Jefferson or Temple University Hospitals. The mock MRI scanner poses no risk to the participant and does not take images of their brains. The mock scanner will simply give them the opportunity to become acclimated with the environment and to practice sitting still.
2. Is an MRI safe?
An MRI scan is completely safe and we take plenty of precautions to make the experience as comfortable as possible. If the participant feels uncomfortable during the scan, as some people worry about feeling claustrophobic, he or she will be able to activate an alarm that alerts us to end the scan and take them our of the MRI machine. Additionally, researchers and MRI technicians can see the participants through a glass window throughout the entirety of the scan and have the opportunity to talk to them throughout the MRI through a microphone. Participants will be provided with blankets if they are cold, and they will have a pillow to prop their legs up for comfort. Additionally, there will be padding around their heads to help them comfortably remain still.
3. What can I wear while getting an MRI?
The MRI machine is a giant magnet, this means that no metal objects may be present in the room with the scanner. Participants should wear comfortable clothes that do not contain metal. Some common items that can’t be worn while in the scanner include: jeans, under-wire bras, piercings, and bobby pins. Participants will be able to secure their items in a locker at the hospital.
The mock MRI scanner at Temple University main campus is not a giant magnet. That being said, participants have no outfit restrictions.
4. What if I no longer wish to participate in the study?
You are allowed to discontinue participation at any point during the study.
