Message from the Dean of Libraries

“…Many students beginning the first year of their undergraduate education have only the vaguest sense of the intellectual journey they’re about to undertake. Even so, over the course of their years as students, their knowledge deepens and their sense of connection to their chosen field of study grows, and some of the most curious and motivated among our students will embrace the opportunity along that path to become researchers with the advice and mentorship of their faculty.”

“…The library is a fundamental laboratory for that exploratory engagement with prior work that enables the asking of new questions and the generation of new answers and new creative solutions and new works of art. The research library in both its digital and its physical forms and in the expertise of librarians for supporting structured inquiry, sits at the heart of this inquiry process.”

“…We choose to celebrate undergraduate research in the library because it really is at the core of the work we support, we believe in, and we connect to in our roles as professionals, in our roles as stewards of the intellectual and cultural record. The culminating work of our best student researchers excites the mind and inspires us to look forward to a world that their contributions will make better.”
