Service Learning

In service-learning, students engage in a real-world application of classroom knowledge within their community. It allows students to synthesize the material they have learned in class, think reflectively and critically, and feel a sense of civic responsibility. Course learning objectives are linked to meaningful community and environmental needs.

We plan to offer short applied learning experiences for students in the introductory classes. For example, students can learn about urban gardening or monitoring stormwater.  Check back to find out about our first service learning project.

Student Benefits of Community Engagement can include, but are not limited to:

  1. improved problem solving skill,
  2.  increased ability to apply classroom skills to real-world conditions,
  3. greater self-efficacy,
  4. development of leadership and citizenship skills, and
  5. development of professional connections with the community for career opportunities.
