Sports stories are everywhere.
They live in packed arenas and quiet gyms, in athletes’ personal journeys, in the work of people behind the scenes, and in the communities that form around teams and competition. They are about more than scores. They are about ambition, identity, leadership, opportunity, culture, and connection.
The Sports Storytelling Project at Temple began in SPME 1112: Introduction to Sports and Communication. Students in the course can submit their writing to be featured on the site, giving them an early opportunity to test their interests and abilities in sports media.
For some students, that may mean discovering a passion for reporting, writing, interviewing, photography, or video. For others, it may be the first time they see their work reach an audience beyond the classroom. The project is designed to help students begin building confidence and a body of work before they are further along in their academic and professional journeys.
It also creates space for stories that may not otherwise be told. Students can look beyond the most visible teams, athletes, and storylines to find people, communities, ideas, and experiences that deserve attention. The work is not limited to Temple Athletics, Philadelphia sports or other local areas. It can cover sports wherever students find meaningful stories worth sharing.
The Sports Storytelling Project is also built to mirror a core question for students entering this field: How would you build a sports media business yourself?
That means considering the audience, developing original ideas, producing quality work, building a consistent voice, and creating value for readers, viewers, and potential partners. Students will learn not only how to create content, but also where that content lives, who it serves, and what it says about them as emerging professionals.
As the project grows, it will feature original reporting, video, photography, and analysis created by Temple University’s Sports Media students. For readers, it offers new perspectives on the people and issues shaping sports. For students, it is a place to practice, publish, and begin building the portfolios that will carry them forward.
