Dr. Becki Beadling
Assistant Professor
Temple University
Department of Earth and Environmental Science

Dr. Beadling is an Assistant Professor at Temple University in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. She uses observations and climate model simulations to understand the ocean’s role in the climate system. Given its role in the carbon and heat budget of our planet, understanding our ocean and how it will evolve will help reduce uncertainty in climate change projections. Her research particularly focuses on ocean circulation and physical and biogeochemical processes within the Southern Ocean, their projected changes under continued warming, and the role these remote processes play in the global climate. Dr. Beadling also has a strong interest in building process-oriented diagnostics to investigate biases in ocean properties and circulation in coupled climate models. Beadling serves as a Lead Author for the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) Chapter 6: Global Projections Across Timescales, contributing to the international effort to synthesize climate science for policymakers. She collaborates closely with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory on climate model development efforts and as a funded member of NOAA’s Model Diagnostic Task Force. She also serves on the World Climate Research Programme’s Coupled Model Intercomparison Project’s (CMIP) Model Benchmarking Task Team.
“Tell me what you do, and tell me why it matters”. Outside of her research, Beadling has a strong passion for science communication and engaging the public in discussions around climate and environmental issues.

Caroline Burkholder
Senior Sustainability Manager
Temple University
Office of Sustainability
caroline.burkholder@temple.edu
As Senior Sustainability Manager, Caroline oversees the development of strategic outreach and engagement programs and communication campaigns to increase visibility of Temple’s climate commitment, improve literacy on critical sustainability and environmental justice issues, and build the capacity of the students, staff, and faculty to support the university’s sustainability efforts. She coordinates and facilitates the implementation of the university’s climate action plan and campus sustainability initiatives and assists in institutional reporting. Prior to joining the Office of Sustainability, Caroline worked as an electoral and advocacy organizer and political campaign strategist, most recently serving as the Pennsylvania State Director of Defend Our Future, the campus climate action organizing project of the Environmental Defense Fund. Caroline graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in Sociology and a B.A. in American Studies in 2014. In 2023, Caroline earned a Master of Arts in Urban Bioethics from Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Her thesis investigated the role of university health systems in climate action planning processes, and she has general research interests in organizational ethics, critical urban studies, spatial justice, environmental health equity, and climate embodiment.
