How Do I Get Involved?

Global Health Adventures: Join Us in Making a World of Difference!

Whether you’re an undergraduate student, graduate student, or faculty mentor, if you have an interest in global health, we invite you to join us in our mission.

Register for a PHBB Class

Undergraduate students need to register for two classes (EPBI 3377 + EPBI 3387) to be able to travel abroad with the PHBB Student Team. During the semester, students work under faculty and graduate student mentorship to develop health promotion and related educational activities tailored to a specific community abroad. The hands-on activities depend on the community’s needs and may include, but not be limited to, nutrition, responsible water use, personal hygiene, mental health, bullying, gender equality, or health communication. During the trips to the community, students meet with local leaders and conduct needs assessments, environmental scans, deliver program/activities and/or conduct program evaluations depending on the stage of the community partnership. Cultural competence is a fundamental component of our trips and students will be asked to participate in daily reflections that also include discussions about quality improvement. Trips last from 10-14 days. The cost of travel may vary depending on the travel destination (approximately $1,500) and is the responsibility of the student unless competitive funding sources are available. The cost of travel includes the flights, room and board, and in-country transportation.

NOTE: Students do not need to speak the country language to be able to participate.

Graduate student mentors need to register for a class (EPBI 5587) which can count towards the Global Health Certificate for students enrolled in that program. Graduate students supervise and provide advice to PHBB undergraduate students about health promotion and educational activities. They also help coordinate travel, communications and may also assist with Institutional Review Board applications as appropriate. Graduate student mentors will develop skills in team leadership, interpersonal skills, critical thinking and the use of decision-making processes that integrate a global understanding and demonstrate respect and appreciation for cultural differences in values and beliefs.

Join the PHBB Student Association

If you have an interest in global health, all students (graduate and undergraduate) from all departments at Temple University are welcomed and strongly encouraged to become part of the PHBB Student Organization. You can join PHBB through Owl Connect.

Note: You do not need to be a PHBB Student Association member to register for a PHBB class.

Join PHBB as a Faculty Mentor

Faculty mentors meet and advise graduate and undergraduate students during the academic year to support the development of educational activities and materials. Faculty mentors travel in-country with the students for a period of 10-14 days to supervise students’ implementation and evaluations activities.
