Engineering and Public Health Students Join Forces for Sustainable Sanitation and Hygiene

Temple PHBB students are partnering with the Temple’s Engineers without Borders Student Chapter. Engineer without Borders students focus on building latrines for the community of Tena while Public Health Beyond Borders students focus on educational activities on personal hygiene, and the safe use of water.

2024: In May/June of 2024, a PHBB Team travelled with EWB students to develop six pilot latrines in the Community of Nueva Jerusalén near Tena. The Team implemented hand-washing and oral hygiene activities among 75 elementary school children.

A Photo Voice* project was also implemented among three fifteen-year old adolescents who presented their work at a community meeting at the end of our visit.

* Photovoice uses people’s photographic documentation of their everyday lives as an educational tool to record and to reflect on community needs, promote dialogue, and encourage action.
