The Neurochemistry and Cognition (NECO) Lab is in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Temple University, Philadelphia. We study how neuromodulatory systems shape cognition and how that capacity shifts between health and pathological states. Our research centers on the synaptic, neurochemical, and circuit dynamics that support attention and executive control systems, and how these are influenced by modifiable lifestyle factors, drugs of abuse, developmental transitions, and aging. This work spans from molecules to behavior, integrating preclinical models with human translational studies to bridge mechanistic insight with clinical relevance. Identifying these causal brain network and circuit-level mechanisms of cognition, along with potential biomarkers, may allow us to design interventions for psychological and neurological conditions and to advance public health. Students in the lab train across this full spectrum — from protein biochemistry to human neuroimaging, psychometric/cognitive testing, physiological measurements, and computational approaches — while contributing to research aimed at protecting cognitive and mental health across the lifespan.
