We are currently searching for candidates to fill the following position:

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER: The Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the College of Public Health at Temple University is accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar to provide doctoral-level support for an ongoing NIH-funded research project on live donor kidney transplantation. Under the supervision of Dr. Heather Gardiner (Principal Investigator), the postdoctoral scholar will assist with:

  • qualitative coding of patient-provider consultations
  • manuscript development
  • the identification of funding opportunities and writing grant applications
  • report generation
  • preparation of presentations of study findings to scientific and lay communities.

The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to work collaboratively with other research staff in the Health Disparities Research Lab. The incumbent will also be expected to actively pursue fellowship/grant funding for their own research in order to develop their future professional career. The position will remain open until filled.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Foundational knowledge of and experience with best practices in qualitative and quantitative research design and methods
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis and interpretation, and corresponding software
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail and ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Proficiency with academically oriented Internet research databases (e.g., PubMed) and software (e.g., Mendeley, Zotero)
  • Familiarity and success with academic manuscript generation and publication, as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience developing and delivering poster and oral presentations to scientific/academic audiences
  • Experience with submissions to Institutional Review Boards and human subjects protections
  • Ability to acquire accurate, reproducible data
  • Critical eye toward detail, consistency, reproducibility, and the scientific method
  • Superior project and time management skills
  • Excellent teamwork, and written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks and planning
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite of products and ability to master other computer software/applications
  • Advocate for workplace safety and ethics
  • An interest in the subject matter
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with organ donation, live kidney donation, or live donor kidney transplantation
  • Experience with grant writing

 Required Education and Experience

The successful candidate will have a PhD in health communication, public health, health services, social sciences or another related discipline. The ideal background includes mixed methods research, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analyses, community engaged research. The candidate will demonstrate: evidence of strong research knowledge, skills and attitudes; an interest in the subject matter; and a familiarity and success with the academic publication environment. The selected candidate must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and to continue through the term of the appointment.

Terms and Conditions

This postdoctoral scholar position based in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences will be 12 months in duration, with the possibility of renewal for a second year based on performance. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2024, or as negotiated. UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIPS (Fall 2024 & Spring 2025): Interns will learn about, provide administrative support for, and participate in public health research that addresses disparities in organ donation and transplantation in the United States. Interns will also contribute to other research projects/activities assigned by the principal investigator, Heather Gardiner, PhD/MPH, and will report to the PI on a weekly basis.
