Session Descriptions

IEW Kick-Off: The (hopefully) Post-COVID Landscape

Monday, November 15, 5-6:15pm ET (11pm CET; 7am JST +1)
Online

From navigating a global pandemic, to learning new educational technology, to confronting climate change and diversity and equity issues that require deep systemic change, the past two years have presented myriad challenges, forcing us all to pivot quickly and to reimagine the value of and approach to higher education. Kick off the week with leaders from Temple Rome, Temple Japan, the Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Education Abroad and the Office of International Affairs as they discuss the (hopefully) post-COVID landscape in higher education. These campus leaders will address how Temple has responded to recent challenges and share their vision for the future of global education.

Panelists:

Moderator: Suzanne Willever, Ph.D., Associate Director, Outreach & Academic Initiatives, Education Abroad & Overseas Campuses

Teaching Through an Intercultural Lens

Faculty Workshop

Tuesday, November 16, 8-9:30am ET (2pm CET; 10pm JST)
Online

Intercultural learning matters because it helps students develop skills that are critical to becoming more empathetic humans, collective problem solvers and leaders of the future. Thus, it is applicable to a variety of learning contexts, whether you are interested in taking students abroad, facilitating guest lectures or student discussions across campuses, or teaching in a multicultural classroom right here on campus (hint: you are). You will leave this workshop with some effective practices for enhancing intercultural learning in your classroom.

Facilitators:

Linda Hasunuma, Ph.D., Assistant Director, Center for the Advancement of Teaching Suzanne Willever, Ph.D., Associate Director, Outreach and Academic Initiatives, Education Abroad & Overseas Campuses

Study Abroad and Sustainable Living

Tuesday, November 16, 12:30-1:45pm ET (6:30pm CET; 2:30am JST +1)
Online

Our students are facing an uncertain future, one disrupted by a climate crisis, global pandemic, social inequities and so much more. Studying abroad teaches us about ourselves and our relationship to the world around us, including the planet itself. Join a panel of study abroad and international students as they discuss sustainability practices in their home country and what they have learned from studying in other countries. Find out how their experiences abroad changed their perspective on climate change and sustainable practices and will alter their behavior back home.

Panelists:

Emma Grant (Temple Rome)
Miquela Berge (Temple Exchange, Hamburg, Germany)
Kerry Shanahan (External Program, Australia)
Pangcheng Huang (International Student, China)

The imminent realities of climate change pose challenges for the entire world. Global disruptions will devastate economies, shake the foundations of political institutions, threaten food security, and create an unprecedented refugee crisis. But every disruption creates a space for positive change as well. What opportunities are there for hope and growth in a world where the status quo falters? Join us as faculty panelists from Temple’s campuses in Rome, Tokyo and Philadelphia will discuss these challenges and solutions from multiple perspectives.
