Philadelphia Schools Partnership with iPraxis

Read below to find out previous work done with local schools in the Philadelphia area.

Temple EWB was unable to continue this work with the COVID-19 pandemic, but hopefully will get back to volunteering with schools again soon!

Temple EWB is focused on providing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) resources to Philadelphia’s schools. Our partner organization, iPraxis, has been coordinating efforts to provide STEM mentorship to students of Philadelphia’s schools since 2004. Their primary focus is providing students with awareness and recognition of their own potential within the sciences – something that tends to be lacking in traditional public school settings.

**iPraxis has offered to reimburse us for train/bus fare!**

The school requires volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the mornings (usually between 9am-11am) and in the afternoons (between 1pm-3pm). This does not mean you have to stay for the whole time, but we request that you can stay for at least 1 hour and make the commitment weekly. This is the best way to build a relationship with your team and make a lasting impact.

The school’s 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will be creating virtual science fair boards! The 6th grade’s topic is Observational Measurement, the 7th grade’s is Robotics, and the 8th grade’s is Environmental Challenge.

We as their mentors will be helping them develop their topics and explore the steps of the scientific method, in addition to helping them develop presentation and communication skills. Tuesday mentors will have library time (which means a little more space, and a little more freedom to explore!), while Thursday mentors will likely be mentoring during a normal class period. The teacher encourages you to stay for multiple class periods if you can – it’ll give you a chance to experience different grade levels’ projects!

Thank you for your interest and we hope to see you at our next general body meeting!
