Current Projects
In addition to the clinical work provided at the Child & Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic, we are always engaged in research evaluating the effectiveness of our approaches. We hope that our research can lead to a better understanding of childhood anxiety and how we can help more kids benefit from the services we offer. Current research is examining the ways we can involve parents in treatment to increase the gains their children make in therapy.
Social Anxiety Persistence and Remittance in Kids (SPARK) Study! Does your child get worried or stressed about social situations? The SPARK Study is seeking to understand why! This study is currently being led by Dr. Johanna Jarcho, Ph.D. through her National Institutes of Health Research Project Grant (R01), in collaboration with co-investigator Dr. Philip C. Kendall, Ph.D., ABPP. The SPARK study will investigate how youths’ brains respond to social situations with their peers as they mature throughout adolescence, to improve future interventions for social anxiety symptoms. If you have a child aged 9-13 years old and are interested in being contacted to participate in this study, click here. If you have any questions, please contact our clinic or email sdnlab@temple.edu.
Funded Student Projects
Project CHAT (Caregivers Hearing about Anxiety Treatments): This study examines the effect of parent key opinion leaders in increasing parent demand for evidence-based practices (EBPs) to treat anxiety. This study is currently being conducted by our student, Margaret Crane, as part of her Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. This study will investigate whether having a local parent key opinion leader co-facilitate an educational outreach presentation on EBPs for youth anxiety will decrease stigma about seeking treatment, increase parental knowledge about EBPs, and increase parental intention to seek EBPs for their youth.
The Learning from Evaluation And Recall of iNteractions (LEARN) Study: The LEARN study examines how children and adolescents’ brains learn about their peers as they interact with them online. This study is currently being conducted by our student Tessa Clarkson as part of her Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award. She is interested in if there are differences in the way individuals with social anxiety experientially learn during social interactions. For those interested in being contacted to participate in this study, click here.
Project LEARNING: Project LEARNing (LEveraging AI to predict Response and Nonresponse IN Grouped data) will aggregate data from randomized controlled trials of youth anxiety treatment trials and build a machine learning model to predict response and non-response to treatment. The model will then be implemented in the CAADC to predict treatment response at the individual level for anxious youth. This study is currently being conducted by our student Lesley Norris as part of her Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award.
The Impact of Peer Advice-Giving among Youth Advice-Givers: This study will examine how youth giving advice after mental health treatment may contribute to feelings of self-efficacy and social connectedness for the advice-giver. This study will be conducted by our student Julia Spandorfer as part of her National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship award.
Past Projects
Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Study: The CAMS project examined the efficacy of different types of treatments for child anxiety: cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication, combination medication and therapy, and a pill placebo condition.
Child/Adolescent Anxiety Multimodal Extended Long-term Study: The CAMELS project was a follow-up to the original CAMS study. In this phase, we examined the long-term outcomes of the children that were in each of the various treatment conditions. We were interested in the long-term development of their anxiety, as well as how they were currently functioning in their daily lives.
The Cats and Dogs Project: This project examined how well we can implement and disseminate cognitive behavioral therapies in schools. We trained school staff to administer an interactive, computer-assisted treatment designed to treat anxiety in children. We then followed schools for a number of years after to see how the treatments were used in subsequent years. We’ve worked with schools in the Philadelphia area and in Canada!
Treatment of Anxiety and Autism Spectrum Disorders Project: The TAASD research project was a treatment outcome study, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of South Florida. We examined the efficacy of two different cognitive behavioral therapy treatments for children with autism spectrum disorders and co-occurring anxiety disorders.
