Philip C. Kendall, Ph.D., ABPP is a Distinguished University Professor, a Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology, and Director of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Temple University.
Dr. Kendall received his undergraduate education at Old Dominion University with mentor Dr. Peter Mikulka, He then completed his doctorate in clinical psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University where he performed research with Drs. Al Finch, Don Kiesler, and fellow graduate students. Here he completed one of his first randomized control trials: a project done to evaluation the efficacy of self-instructional training for impulsive youth, which was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health’s F31 grant. Dr. Kendall then received experience interning at the Palo Alto VA hospital where he acquired skills and knowledge about inpatient services, diagnostic assessment of adults, and medical psychology.
His accomplishments are numerous: 800+ publications and 35+ years of uninterrupted grant support from various agencies (i.e., NIMH, NICHD, MacArthur Foundation). He is widely cited, and among an elite handful of the most frequently-cited individuals in all of the social and medical sciences. His H factor in 2021 is 132.
His accomplishments also include serving as Honorary Visiting Expert in Psychiatry and CBT at the Ministry of Health in Singapore, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Lackland Air Force Base at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, Visiting Professor at the Universidad Peruana in Lima, Peru, Arthur B. Richard Visiting Professor in Child Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine, and Guest Lecturer at the Institute for Studies in Learning Disabilities at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Kendall was twice a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford-once as a Summer Fellow and again as a sabbatical from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Kendall has garnered prestigious awards: Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, inaugural Research Recognition Award from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, “Great Teacher” award from Temple University, identified as a “top therapist” in the tristate area by Philadelphia Magazine, and the Society of Clinical Psychology 2006 Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Science of Clinical Psychology. In 2016, the Academy of Cognitive Therapy recognized him with the “Aaron T. Beck Award for Significant and Enduring Contributions to Cognitive Therapy.”
Dr. Kendall has also directly trained over 150 doctoral students (and counting), chaired, or participated on roughly 200 dissertation defense committees, directly mentors a number of highly impressive postdoctoral research fellows and taught countless undergraduates.
Dr. Kendall has designed and evaluated treatment programs for youth (e.g., Coping Cat program). His programs have been identified as empirically-supported, have been implemented in over a dozen countries, and are the focus of numerous federally-funded research initiatives.
