If you are experiencing stress, we recommend using a technique called “Stop, Cope. Go!” to reduce the stress and make yourself feel better. First, you have to slow down and take a pause. Ask yourself, “What is happening to my body? What is going through my head?” Are you sweating, clenching your teeth, or shaking your hands? Are you talking negatively to yourself?
After becoming aware of these sensations and thoughts, ask yourself, “How can I help my body calm down? What thoughts will help me do what I need to do?” Use strategies like deep breathing, muscle relaxation, and exercise. Also, ask yourself coping thoughts like “What’s the worst thing that can happen? How likely is that to happen?”
Afterwards, you can let your coping thoughts guide your actions and reduce your stress.
