Ms. Shuimei Zhang, a Ph.D. student at the Advanced Signal Processing (ASP) Lab of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Temple University, was awarded the Best Student Paper Award at the 11th IEEE Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing (SAM 2020) Workshop. This workshop, held in Hangzhou, China, in June 2020, was delivered online because of COVID-19.
Titled “DOA estimation exploiting interpolated multi-frequency sparse array,” this paper developed a novel array processing framework and the associated direction-of-arrival (DOA) methods that achieve significantly enhanced target direction estimation capability and improved performance. The proposed technique is considered to bring significant impacts on many applications such as radar, communications, and underwater sensing. Co-authors of this paper include Ammar Ahmed, another Ph.D. student at the ASP Lab, Dr. Yimin D. Zhang, Director of the ASP Lab and the dissertation advisor for both Shuimei and Ammar, and Dr. Shunqiao Sun, an Assistant Professor of the University of Alabama.
Among 167 papers accepted for presentation at the SAM 2020, six student authors were selected as the finalists and were invited to present and defend their papers through online video conference in front of the judging committee. The judging committee, consisting of renowned experts from different countries, selected Shuimei as the only awardee to receive the Best Student Paper Award.
IEEE SAM Workshop, organized biennially by the Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing (SAM) Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, is dedicated to advance signal processing theory and methods related to array signals involving multiple sensors and/or multiple channels. Dr. Yimin D. Zhang is an elected member of the SAM Technical Committee since 2015 and was a Technical Co-Chair of the previous IEEE SAM Workshop held in Sheffield, U.K., in July 2018.
