The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has selected a research paper that was co-authored by Dr. Yimin Daniel Zhang, Associate Professor and Director of the Advanced Signal Processing Lab, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, to receive the 2019 IET Communications Premium Award. The Premium Awards are given by the IET to recognize the best research papers published during the previous two years.

The award-winning paper, titled “Compressive sensing based coprime array direction-of-arrival estimation,” was published in the IET Communications in August 2017. This paper develops a novel approach to enable coprime arrays to perform direction-of-arrival estimation with a high number of degrees of freedom at low computational complexity. A key contribution is to use random compressive sensing kernels to compress the received signals of coprime array with a large aperture to lower-dimensional measurements.

Coprime array and, in more general, sparse array designs, is one of the core areas highlighting Dr. Zhang’s recent research activities. Among his many well-referenced articles published on this topic, “Generalized coprime array configurations for direction-of-arrival estimation,” which was published in IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing in March 2015, received the 2018 IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award.

This is the second IET Premium Award that Dr. Zhang has received. He received the 2016 IET Radar, Sonar & Navigation Premium Award for his article ‘Multi-window time and frequency signature reduction from undersampled continuous-wave radar measurements for fall detection’ published in IET Radar, Sonar & Navigation in February 2015.
