Project: Reinforcement learning in optimizing the electric vehicle battery system coupling with driving behaviors

Description: This project is aimed at creating systematic dynamic models for the vehicle system and market as well as transportation systems; and facilitating understanding of how to efficiently and effectively transition from the current petroleum-based transportation energy system to one that is more sustainable, intelligent, and energy-diverse.
Using real-life statistics of drivers’ daily travel demands in the U.S., we implement reinforcement learning to provide drivers with charger type and charging time suggestions to maximize battery lifetime and minimize the cost of charging over a one-year timespan. The study shows that using the appropriate charger type (No Charge, Level 1, Level 2, DC FC, xFC) with an appropriate charging time can reduce battery degradation and total charging cost at the end of the year while satisfying the driver’s daily travel demand.
