STEM Outreach is an important activity for getting students of all ages involved and interested in science. The Wuest Group participates as volunteers to judge in local science fairs. Our graduate students have volunteered at the George Washington Carver Science Fair (Elementary and Secondary), the oldest running science fair in Philadelphia, as well as the regional Delaware Valley Science Fair both of which takes place yearly.

Our group has also reached out into the community and started a partnership to promote this kind of STEM outreach with inner city and underrepresented middle school students. Project GISMO (Generating Interest in the Scientific Method through Outreach) involves the  mentoring of middle school students from North Philadelphia. With the help of Madison Fletcher and Amy Solinski, graduate students in the group, we walk students through the Scientific Method using instructional exercises and demonstrations. The ultimate goal of the project is to help the students develop a science project to present at the George Washington Science Fair in February.
