I am so glad you asked. Let me tell you. This blog is named after Rebecca Raccoon Coolidge, a pet raccoon kept by American president Calvin Coolidge in 1926. She was given to the White House unsolicited by a Mississippi resident for Thanksgiving dinner. Instead, Coolidge pardoned the animal, named her Rebecca, and kept her as a pet. President Coolidge had many animals in his time at the white house, most of which spent their time in a private zoo, but not Rebecca. Rebecca lived in the White House, and according to records, ran wild throughout the house tearing up furniture and escaping from cages. For Christmas, they gave Rebecca an engraved collar that said “Rebecca Racoon of the White House”. To date, it is my favorite history fact.
This is the lovely lady with First lady Grace Coolidge.
