Verree Wetland Creation

A gravel parking lot in poor condition on the east side of Verree Road was located on the Pennypack Creek floodplain and subsequently replaced with a wetland. All stone and compacted surface material was removed from the site. A contractor excavated, graded and compacted the site to form the wetland and constructed an overflow swale at the far end. The site was backfilled with 8 inches of soil and an additional 4 inches of composted leaf mulch was tilled into the entire area. Volunteers planted 30 large ball & burlap trees (7 species), 39 container trees (6 species), 206 container shrubs (10 species), and 550 plugs (11 species). A seed mix comprised of 7 shrub species and 6 herbaceous plant species was applied.
