We consume an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegreencities.com\/news\/philadelphia-west-chester-and-narberth-sue-pa-for-the-right-to-enforce-plastic-bag-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 billion plastic bags a year<\/a> while the City\u2019s Water Department removes <a href=\"https:\/\/pennenvironment.org\/sites\/environment\/files\/reports\/PAE%20Microplastics%20Mar21%201.1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">44 tons of trash<\/a> from the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers in a single year. But some forms of plastic are easier to remove than others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Plastic doesn\u2019t biodegrade like food waste or paper does. It just breaks up into smaller pieces. Those pieces get smaller and small until they are virtually impossible to remove. We call these \u201cmicroplastics,\u201d or plastics less than 5 millimeters in length. That\u2019s the size of a grain of rice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they are so small, microplastics are then easily consumed by wildlife. As the plastic accumulates in their bellies, they may starve to death. They may suffer but still survive. Either way, they pass those plastics onto the next animal who eats them, who will pass it onto the next one. As it moves through the food chain, that plastic eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn28242-plastic-in-the-food-chain-artificial-debris-found-in-fish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reaches humans<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t know the long term effects of microplastics on our bodies\u2019 health or on the overall health of the food chain. <strong>However, we do know that the problem is only getting worse.<\/strong> Half of all plastics ever manufactured were made in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/environment\/article\/plastic-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the past 15 years<\/a> and, at its current rate of production, plastic is estimated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/campaigns\/ocean_plastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/files\/2021\/04\/2018-06-29-e-lee-new-jersey-monmouth-beach-ban-on-plastic-straws1-1920x1280-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-492\" width=\"367\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/files\/2021\/04\/2018-06-29-e-lee-new-jersey-monmouth-beach-ban-on-plastic-straws1-1920x1280-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/files\/2021\/04\/2018-06-29-e-lee-new-jersey-monmouth-beach-ban-on-plastic-straws1-1920x1280-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/files\/2021\/04\/2018-06-29-e-lee-new-jersey-monmouth-beach-ban-on-plastic-straws1-1920x1280-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/files\/2021\/04\/2018-06-29-e-lee-new-jersey-monmouth-beach-ban-on-plastic-straws1-1920x1280-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/files\/2021\/04\/2018-06-29-e-lee-new-jersey-monmouth-beach-ban-on-plastic-straws1-1920x1280-1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><figcaption>Monmouth, New Jersey (<em>StateImpact)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In Pennsylvania alone, microplastics were found in <a href=\"https:\/\/pennenvironment.org\/sites\/environment\/files\/reports\/PAE%20Microplastics%20Mar21%201.1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 50 of most popular waterways<\/a>.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time for policy change to reduce plastic pollution in the city and state. Sadly, a state law temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/stateimpact.npr.org\/pennsylvania\/2020\/06\/01\/state-lawmakers-block-plastic-bag-bans-like-philadelphias-in-move-one-representative-calls-huge-abuse-of-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bans local governments<\/a> from banning plastic bags. Fortunately, the local governments of Philadelphia, West Chester, and Narberth are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegreencities.com\/news\/philadelphia-west-chester-and-narberth-sue-pa-for-the-right-to-enforce-plastic-bag-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suing the state government<\/a> on grounds that this ban is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>While a step in the right direction, a plastic bag ban is not sufficient to ensure the well-being of human and non-human life in Pennsylvania.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In their report \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pennenvironment.org\/sites\/environment\/files\/reports\/PAE%20Microplastics%20Mar21%201.1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microplastics in Pennsylvania<\/a>,\u201d the environmental advocacy organization <em>PennEnvironment<\/em> calls for the policies to phase out single-use plastics, establish responsibility for waste producers to manage post-consumer waste, prevent overstocking in the clothing industry, and developing green infrastructure to filter microplastics from our sewage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>America has a Plastic Problem.
