{"id":452,"date":"2021-03-30T16:02:49","date_gmt":"2021-03-30T20:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/?p=452"},"modified":"2021-07-08T13:24:26","modified_gmt":"2021-07-08T17:24:26","slug":"adventure-bound-green-grant-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tusustainability\/2021\/03\/30\/adventure-bound-green-grant-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"Temple Adventure Bound Organization Shaping Zero-Waste Culture on Campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Race to Zero Waste #EcoChampions.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As Leave No Trace instructors, these four superstar leaders are shaping zero-waste culture on campus with 85 of their peers and student organization, Adventure Bound.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Brandon, certified in EMT, is a nursing major (2024) from Massachusetts. He will be <em>guiding <\/em>in Northern Maine for a canoe outfitter summer of 2021.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Christina, certified in NREMT, is a Health Professions major (2022) with a minor in Biology, and is on pre-medical track. She helped start the <em>first Adventure Bound organization <\/em>at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookdalecc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brookdale Community College<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Issa Kabeer is an Environmental Science major (2021). Issa is an EcoRep with Temple Sustainability and <em>works at hospitals providing emotional therapy<\/em>.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nadia Ramos, certified in LNT, is a psychology major (2022) on the pre-occupational therapy track. She also transferred from Brookdale and <em>peer coaches students with intellectual disability.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adventure Bound.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adventure Bound is a club that takes place out of the classroom, a place to meet like-minded, motivated individuals. Adventure Bound facilitates all types of adventures ranging from hiking, biking, rafting and surfing, snowboarding, zip-lining, camping, museum trips, and even going international! With the beautiful city of Philadelphia at our doorstep, they have the privilege to get outside, visit museums, go to concerts, and explore different parts of the city as a group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for social impact, Adventure Bounds goal is to partner with local youth &#8212; provide outdoor education an mentorship and increase access to green spaces, taking young people on hikes, museum trips, and all types of adventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>See their Instagram <a class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Student Leaders Shaping Zero-Waste Culture on Campus. <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since day one, Adventure Bound takes the utmost responsibility for their ecological footprint. As their mission spreads across campus, their conversations are an example of the zero-waste culture Temple students aspire to cultivate. Adventure Bound plans to use their newfound knowledge in many different areas of sustainability.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mentor program for general members to maintain their Leave No Trace certification.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Facilitate regular Leave No Trace workshops within the Student Center, or over Zoom.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Online informational brochure with tips on packing sustainably, hitching a tent, hanging hammocks, and sustainable travel ideas, accessible by QR code.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Purchasing sustainable camping and outdoor gear for future excursions with equipment that will allow discarding of waste easily and hear made from sustainable and renewable resources.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Paying visits to various thrift stores to purchase things like jackets and cookware<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>End goal: Utilize knowledge and sustainable gear on camping trips. Click on the links to learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/why\/7-principles\/plan-ahead-and-prepare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plan Ahead &amp; Prepare<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Helping backcountry travelers accomplish trip goals safely and enjoyably while minimizing damage to the land<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/why\/7-principles\/travel-camp-on-durable-surfaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Travel &amp; Camp on Durable Surfaces<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Two primary factors increase how off-trail travel affects the land: durability of surfaces and vegetation, and frequency of travel (or group size).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/why\/7-principles\/dispose-of-waste-properly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dispose of Waste Properly<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cPack it in, Pack it out\u201d is a familiar mantra to seasoned wildland visitors. Any user of recreation lands has a responsibility to clean up before he or she leaves.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/why\/7-principles\/leave-what-you-find\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leave What You Find<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Allow others a sense of discovery by leaving rocks, plants, archaeological artifacts and other objects of interest as you find them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/why\/7-principles\/minimize-campfire-impacts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minimize Campfire Impacts<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A true Leave No Trace fire shows no evidence of having been constructed.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/why\/7-principles\/respect-wildlife\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Respect Wildlife<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Learn about wildlife through quiet observation. Do not disturb wildlife or plants just for a \u201cbetter look.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lnt.org\/why\/7-principles\/be-considerate-of-other-visitors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Be Considerate of Other Visitors&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Many people come to the outdoors to listen to nature. Excessive noise, uncontrolled pets and damaged surroundings take away from the natural appeal of the outdoors.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2020 Green Grant Award Winners.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Green Grant has already enabled Adventure Bound to build their own website.
