{"id":4789,"date":"2018-03-13T03:41:50","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T07:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/?p=4789"},"modified":"2020-11-12T19:57:48","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T23:57:48","slug":"virtual-reality-six-flags-colombia-nba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/2018\/03\/13\/virtual-reality-six-flags-colombia-nba\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Reality is in Six Flags, Colombia and the NBA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Crystal Tatis<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Oculus Rift<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Playstation\u00a0VR<\/em>, <em>HTC\u00a0Vive<\/em>, <em>Google Cardboard<\/em>, <em>Samsung Gear VR<\/em>&#8212;- words that people thought were part of a bad\u00a0Mad-lib game\u00a0but has instead\u00a0become\u00a0mainstream communication devices.\u00a0Virtual\u00a0Reality (VR)\u00a0has met\u00a0a\u00a0great opportunity for expansion into other industries like medicine, military support and my personal favorite, retail. If the\u00a0<em>Pok\u00e9mon\u00a0Go<\/em> phase has taught me anything it&#8217;s that a lot of people have smartphones\u2026 and that there is an increasing acceptance of Augmented\u00a0Reality (AR) and Virtual\u00a0Reality\u00a0in our everyday lives.<\/p>\n<p>Virtual Reality is entering mainstream status with the arrival of affordable and user-friendly headsets. VR is allowing business to show off their products and services in an innovative way. It\u2019s not shocking to learn that\u00a0corporate\u00a0businesses took this\u00a0opportunity and ran with it. As far as practical applications\u00a0go\u00a0for\u00a0VR,\u00a0even though some people think it\u2019s\u00a0limited,\u00a0it&#8217;s already being used and having substantial effects. Here are some examples of companies that have adapted VR into their\u00a0overall marketing strategy\u00a0and or ventures:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livenation.com\/?c=LN_NAC_SEM_NAT_Google_NAT_NAT_BrandCampaignETANew2_NONE_Standard_G_0_19000101_99991231&amp;GCID=26229&amp;keyword=&amp;awtrc=true&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4qK28-vI2QIVAh-GCh2cJgxOEAAYASAAEgIVEPD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">Live Nation<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(a\u00a0concert\u00a0promotion\u00a0company)\u00a0partnered with\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201108142735\/http:\/\/www.nextvr.com\/\">NextVR<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(\u00a0a\u00a0virtual reality content company)\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/online.citi.com\/US\/login.do\">Citi<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(giant\u00a0banking company)\u00a0to stream 10 live concerts, this way providing an unprecedented access to fans who enjoy live music.\u00a0This concert series grants credit card members behind the scenes access with their special\u00a0tickets. Also, to bring patrons into dressing rooms and on stage at sound checks\u00a0virtually. This will help everyone involved to improve publicity and, as an innovative marketing strategy, reach more people than they could using traditional advertising methods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixflags.com\/america\">Six Flags<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>wanted to create a cosmic experience for their customers and did so by adding a VR roller coaster to their portfolio. The Galactic Attack involves the consumers\u00a0wearing\u00a0<em>Samsung Gear VR<\/em> headsets and\u00a0 shooting at\u00a0random\u00a0targets on the way up\u00a0the hill by using\u00a0the buttons on\u00a0your\u00a0headset.\u00a0While doing so, they\u00a0fly through space,\u00a0encounter an\u00a0army of flying alien drones and\u00a0more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l3065_dLPrg\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l3065_dLPrg<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowesinnovationlabs.com\/\">Lowe\u2019s Innovation Labs<\/a><\/em>\u00a0made it possible for customers to use AR\u00a0to\u00a0better\u00a0visualize their finished\u00a0home\u00a0projects\u00a0before\u00a0they\u00a0even began. Also,\u00a0they\u00a0offer\u00a0a different experience through\u00a0VR\u00a0headsets\u00a0that create an immersive experience\u00a0by\u00a0watching the\u00a0renovations for their dream home come to life. Lowe&#8217;s will be able to offer better customer service, may be able to engage more with their consumers and gain loyalty and word of mouth from it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lCRH50qyVd4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lCRH50qyVd4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toms.com\/\">Toms\u00a0Shoes<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and <em>AT&amp;T<\/em>\u00a0teamed up and created a new VR project to show how customer\u2019s purchases actually\u00a0make\u00a0a change in the world. They show the journey of one of\u00a0Toms\u00a0customers traveling to Colombia to meet a child that directly benefits from that customer\u2019s purchase, demonstrating Toms mission of\u00a0matching every pair of shoes purchased with a new pair of shoes for a child in need. These philanthropic companies&#8217; main weakness is that the consumers may buy their products based on their mission statement but they don&#8217;t know how transparent the company actually is. For Toms to record this moment and spread it to a massive audience in an innovative way will probably give them a boost in sales and up their brand value.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.budweiser.com\/\">Budweiser<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>teamed up with the NBA\u2019s Cleveland Cavaliers and started giving away cardboard VR headsets at their playoff game,\u00a0in 2016,\u00a0so that the fans could have a tour of the locker room and a court side view of the national anthem and player introductions before the game. Funny enough, the headsets double as a beer carrying case. Budweiser partnered with the NBA to bring this new holistic experience for those basketball fanatics who are used to watching their favorite team with their favorite beer in hand but maybe don&#8217;t have the money to go to an actual game and see the behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4790\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4790\" style=\"width: 756px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4790 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"756\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser.jpg 756w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser-274x160.jpg 274w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser-700x408.jpg 700w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser-600x350.jpg 600w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser-400x233.jpg 400w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/files\/2018\/02\/budweiser-500x292.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo of Samsung Gear VR from NBA official website www.nba.com\/cavaliers\/releases\/vr-160504<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With all of these examples, it&#8217;s clear that even though\u00a0both technologies have made a huge splash in the gaming industry,\u00a0they are making a successful transition\u00a0into e-commerce.\u00a0While AR &amp;\u00a0VR have slowly\u00a0been\u00a0moving\u00a0into the workplace, it is clear that future\u00a0businesses will use these tools to attract younger generations. Companies understand\u00a0that\u00a0Millennials\u00a0\u201cjust get it,&#8221; meaning that\u00a0they easily\u00a0see the value of these tools\u00a0at work and understand how it helps increase profitability; maybe in 10 years they will even demand this out\u00a0of their employers.<\/p>\n<p><b>References<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Jenkins, R.
