Many of these documents have been scattered over the years, hidden in temples and homes to protect them during times of military conflict and governmental change. This has kept the materials safe but limited who could use them and raised concern for their physical well-being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Professor Nguy\u1ec5nTh\u1ecb \u0110i\u1ec3u and Dr. Ng\u00f4 Thanh Nh\u00e0n came to us with this project seeking a way to provide access to these documents once they are digitized and described as well as for some advice on relevant library practices.\u00a0This summer, Dr. Ng\u00f4 Thanh Nh\u00e0\u00a0has been in Vietnam training a team and traveling with them across the Vietnamese countryside in a van digitizing, cataloging, and describing the cultural\u00a0materials. The digital files will make their\u00a0way to Philadelphia for eventual display within <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.temple.edu\/\">TUL&#8217;s Digital Collections<\/a>\u00a0making them available to\u00a0digital scholars\u00a0and other researchers.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222\"><span style=\"color: #333333\">Dr. Ng\u00f4 Thanh Nh\u00e0n<\/span>\u00a0recently provided an update from the field, an excerpt of which is posted below. Though the hands-on work for this project is just beginning, we are eager to move forward and provide a space for researchers to access these once\u00a0hidden materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The below is an excerpt from a post by Dr.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #222222\">Ng\u00f4 Thanh Nh\u00e0n on how the project has gotten off of the ground in Vietnam. The library, a specially designed four-story building, is surrounded by gardens, palaces, monuments, and tombs of emperors. Founded on September 16, 1976, the library was once known as The Library of B\u00ecnh-Tr\u1ecb-Thi\u00ean until 1989. The General Library of Th\u1eeba Thi\u00ean Hu\u1ebf is funded by the City of Hu\u1ebf and is a part of the Ministry of Culture&#8217;s City Office of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. To date, the collection consists of 142,835 images of 248 distinct family archives, 13 districts, and 52 villages.<\/p>\n<p>Now, for the first time, under the Pilot Digital Project with Temple University Libraries, the General Library of Th\u1eeba Thi\u00ean Hu\u1ebf has its own set of digitization equipment, managed by the Office of Information of Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The Paley Library Project Team consists of Dean Joseph Lucia, Delphine Khanna, Doreva Belfiore, Jonathan LeBreton, Matt Shoemaker, and Gabriel Galson. The Digital Working Group, headed by Nguy\u1ec5n Nh\u01b0 T\u0129nh (Chief of the GLH Office of Information Technology) consists of Ph\u1ea1m Xu\u00e2n Ph\u01b0\u1ee3ng, Prof. Nguy\u1ec5n Th\u1ecb Thanh, Ho\u00e0ng Th\u1ecb H\u1ea3i V\u00e2n, Mai Chi, Tr\u01b0\u01a1ng Th\u1ecb Thanh Nh\u00e0n, \u0110\u1eb7ng Thanh Ho\u00e1, Nguy\u1ec5n Nh\u01b0 T\u0129nh, L\u00ea Vi\u1ebft Tu\u1ea5n, Ph\u1ea1m Tu\u1ea5n Anh, and B\u00f9i T\u1ef1 Th\u00e0nh.<\/p>\n<p>The first day of the Digital Preservation Workshop, June 23, 2014, began at 7am with the workshop organizers meeting over coffee in the Ch\u1ee3t Nh\u1edb Library garden. Next, Director <span style=\"color: #222222\">L\u00ea<\/span>\u00a0Tr\u1ecdng B\u00ecnh delivered an opening statement, and Dr. Ng\u00f4 Thanh Nh\u00e0n presented an overview of the Pilot Digitization Workshop.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon of the first day allowed participants to gain hands-on experience with components such as multilingual text processing and the camera and Dell workstation.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the following nine days of the Digital Preservation Workshop, participants learned about digital preservation standards, Dublin Core,\u00a0 image processing,\u00a0<em>Lightroom<\/em>, and so on. They had the opportunity to participate in a lot of hands on experience as well.
