- International Power Adapter (Type C)
When completing coursework abroad or traveling for leisure, having a laptop and smartphone is essential and so is an international power adapter to effectively charge your devices. These adapters plug into the European wall outlet and allow US devices to be plugged in without having to purchase a new charging cord or device abroad.

- Cash Currency (Czech Crown)
Since Prague is a popular tourist destination, many places accept credit cards, however, this is never a guarantee so it is a good idea to carry around cash. Almost all local markets, small business, or gelato stands only take cash and it would be a shame to miss out on these wonderful treats because you only have a credit card. I would recommend carrying at least 200-300 crowns which is enough to purchase any meal at a local restaurant.
The current conversion for Czech Crowns is 1 US dollar = 23.69 Crowns. (That means $10 will be about 240 Crowns which goes a long way!)
- Comfortable walking shoes
You will do a LOT of walking, trust me, and it’s important to have shoes that are comfortable and won’t cause blisters or aches. For most European countries, driving is not nearly as common as it is in the US, so locals utilize public transportation and walking to get around the city. I had a 20 minute walk to my school every morning as well as daily tours and events in the city that made walking mandatory and comfortable shoes a must.
- A Camera
Prague is one of the most picturesque European cities with some of the most beautiful sites along every street. One of my favorite activities I did while I studied abroad in Prague was taking film photography pictures as I walked through the city. Studying abroad is an incredibly memorable experience and it is worth it to take pictures of places and people you want to remember.
- Packing cubes
These really come in handy if you travel away for the weekend on your study abroad as well as packing to go home. Packing cubes can fit way more than you might think and can easily fit into a backpack so there is no need for extra cumbersome carry-on luggage. It’s important to pack as lightly as possible and make sure to save room in your suitcase for all the things you buy when you are abroad. I only bought one suitcase with me on my month-long program and didn’t even use everything I brought. A rule of thumb to follow – if you don’t wear it often at home, you won’t wear it often abroad.
